Make a board update

Turn web pages into a board update

The board section that is hardest to write is the one about everything outside the company.

Board update

What changed, what it cost, what you need from the board.

Internal metrics are easy to report because you own them. The external section — what competitors shipped, what regulators signalled, what the category did — is written from half-remembered links and reads like it. Ancher takes the pages you collected over the quarter and turns them into a section where every external claim carries the publication, the date and the link.

An external claim without a source is the fastest way to lose a board's confidence

A director who follows the sector will know when a competitor announcement was smaller than the update implies, and one unsupported line makes the rest of the document suspect. Because every claim keeps its publication and date, the external section can be checked line by line, which is the only version of it worth writing.

One screen of one page, at source, read two ways.Illustrative. The figure is invented; the gap it falls into is not.

What Ancher also getssource
Board update Source of the claim The competitor's own press page from source

Lands in the draft, with its timecode

  • Every external claim names the publication and the date it was published.
  • A competitor's own announcement is labelled as an announcement rather than reported as an outcome.
  • What is being said repeatedly across the quarter is separated from what was said loudly once.

Web-pages-to-board-update prompt

The link on its own gets a summary. This is the instruction that produces the 5 sections above, in that order, with the rules that keep them honest. Paste it with your web pages — in Ancher, or in whatever assistant you already use.

Write the external section of a board update from these pages. Lead with what changed outside the company. Attach the publication and date to every external claim, and label whether each came from a company announcement or an independent report. Show how the landscape moved across the period rather than only at the end. State what developed against us, and end with the decision the board is being asked to take.
How each part of a web page becomes a section
From the web pageIntoWhy
Title, author, published dateMetricsPublication and date are what make an external claim checkable by a director who follows the sector.
Many pages in one collectionProgressA quarter of collected pages shows movement over time, whereas a handful from last week shows only the last week.
Outbound linksRisksTracing a claim to its origin shows whether a widely reported development is one press release or several independent accounts.
Readable content, declutteredHeadlineNews pages are heavy with related-article furniture, and stripping it leaves what a piece actually reported.
Inline imagesMetricsSector charts inside articles carry the period and source that a headline figure omits.
Everything Ancher keeps from a web page

Readable content, decluttered

Navigation, ads and cookie banners are dropped, so the collection holds the article rather than the page.

Title, author, published date

A date is what stops a three-year-old post from being read as current.

Outbound links

What a writer links to repeatedly reveals the sources they actually trust.

Inline images

Charts and diagrams in an article are usually the evidence the prose is describing.

Many pages in one collection

A single page is an anecdote; the value of this route appears once several are compared.

The four steps
  1. Add the web page. Paste any URL. Ancher fetches the readable content as clean markdown and keeps the title, author, publication date and outbound links — this is the route for articles, newsletters, forum threads and documentation.
  2. Nothing gets flattened. Readable content, decluttered, title, author, published date, outbound links, inline images, many pages in one collection stay separately addressable instead of collapsing into one block of text.
  3. Ask for a board update. Ancher fills headline, metrics, progress, risks, asks using the mapping above, not a generic summary pass.
  4. Check it before you use it. Every specific keeps a link back to where it came from in the web page, so a claim can be verified without reopening the source.
Where this goes wrong
  • A press release is evidence of an announcement, not of a result. Label it that way or the update overstates a competitor.
  • Coverage volume is not significance. Something covered by fifteen outlets from one release is a single event.
  • Public sources over-report the visible. Quiet competitors and unannounced work are systematically missing from this picture.
Questions people ask
Why label the source type?

Because a competitor's press page and an independent report are different kinds of evidence. Presenting an announcement as an outcome is the specific error that gets caught by a director who read the original.

How many pages should I collect?

Whatever you saved over the period, ideally twenty or more. The section becomes useful when it can show a trend across the quarter rather than reacting to the most recent week.

Does this replace the internal update?

No. This route builds the external section only. Internal metrics come from your own systems, and the two sections are written from different sources and different obligations.

Bring your own web pages

Everything you save lives in one workspace, so the board update is built from your sources — not from a model's memory of the internet.
