Where this goes wrong
  • A map shows structure, not substance. Do not use it to decide what a page claims — use it to decide what to read.
  • Very long pages produce maps too dense to read. Two levels is generally the practical limit.
  • Pages that build content with scripts can come through incomplete, and a map of a partial page looks complete, which is worse than an obvious gap.
Questions people ask
Why not just use the page's headings?

Because subheadings on web pages are frequently chosen for search rather than structure. A map built from them shows you a keyword plan; a map built from the body shows you where the argument divides.

Can it map a whole documentation site?

A section of one, yes, and that is where it is most useful. The centre of a body of documentation is not stated on any single page and only becomes visible when the set is mapped together.
